There's a new Spider-Man movie coming, which means one thing is guaranteed to happen at the shop this month: someone is going to walk in, stand in front of the wall, and ask me some version of "okay, where do I even start with this guy?"
I love that question. I also used to dread it, because for years my honest answer was "well, it depends which era, which continuity, whether you want the movies or the comics to line up." That's not an answer. That's a paragraph designed to send a new reader running back to their car.
So this time we did something different. We built a display with four books. Just four. No sixty year reading order spreadsheet, no "well actually." If you're walking in cold off the new movie, here's exactly where to put your hands.
1. Ultimate Spider-Man Vol. 1 — the no baggage option
If you want a brand new Peter Parker with a brand new story and zero homework, start here. This is the one I hand to someone who says "I've genuinely never read a comic book in my life." It doesn't ask you to know anything. It just tells you a good story.
2. Spider-Man: Blue — the one you buy as a gift
This is quiet, gorgeous, and a little sad in the best way. It works on people who don't think of themselves as comic readers, which makes it one of my favorite books to put in someone else's hands. If you're shopping for a partner, a parent, a friend who "doesn't really read comics," this is the one.
3. Spider-Man: Life Story — the one and done
Peter Parker ages in real time across six decades in this book, from the sixties all the way to now. It's a single complete story, which means you finish it and you're done, no cliffhanger, no next volume you have to track down. This one hits hardest for readers who grew up with Spider-Man and drifted away.
4. Spider-Man: The Other — the deep cut for the fans
This one's for the reader who already knows the character and wants something with teeth. Peter Parker dies. Peter Parker comes back changed. It's one of the most talked about arcs in the character's history, and it's still a great answer to "okay, I've read the easy ones, what's next."
Why we're doing this
Twenty three years running this shop, and the thing that's changed the least is that new readers don't need more options. They need fewer, better ones. A wall of a thousand trades is not a welcome mat, it's a wall. Four books and four honest reasons to pick each one is a much easier door to walk through.
