With the success of the What If...? animated series on Disney+, Marvel has announced today via a Comicbook.com exclusive that a What If...? Dark comic series will is coming soon and will explore a more depressing reimagining of the Marvel Universe that is perhaps too much of a bummer for the kid-friendly MCU.
The first issue written by Gerry Conway and Jody Houser imagines a timeline in which it was Peter Parker that died and not Gwen Stacey in the classic 1973 Spider-Man story "The Night Gwen Stacy Died" (The Amazing Spider-Man #121-122). We assume that the outcome, as alluded to on the cover art below (by Greg Land) is that Stacey becomes Spider-Gwen. No word yet on what other narratives they which to explore in the ongoing series of one-shots.
